Cloud Shapes in Blue Skies – Itialian Sonnet

Italian Sonnet
Night’s shelter brings relief to end the day,
exhaling whispers grieve from parched dry lips.
As if cold wind abandoned sailing ships;
marooned –  in deep lost waters, here I lay.
Conflicting thoughts merge, lacking words to say,
my willing heart drawn into your eclipse –
has left me drained. A warm tear gently slips
down a familiar path, wet lines portray.
I long for truth behind your phantom eyes;
release your secret world, allow me in.
I hunger laughter shared on sunny days –
remember finding cloud shapes in blue skies?
I miss your music dancing on my skin,
provoking trust – Oh friend, won’t you please stay?

    Hello again.
I’m in the land of the unknown when it comes to all the different poetry forms, but I really like this poem of yours. Although sad, it’s visually stunning.
    My favorite lines: “I long for truth behind your phantom eyes;
release your secret world, allow me in.”

    Awesome poetry & visuals!

Thanks for giving me the link.

Andy, Forms are a way of educating myself in poetry, while still expressing what it is I want to write. I so much enjoyed the link you left behind, I thought I would return the favor. Have a great week yourself

  3. August 14, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Very lovely lilt to this and you have adhered to the form admirably. Great rhythm and flow to it. I am also amazed at the cloud horse – is it for real or photoshopped, I wonder?

Thank you Eclipse. Love your poem about the tree btw.

  7. August 15, 2011 at 1:33 am

A beautiful sonnet, loving and tranquil. The photo is fabulous: who’d have thought a horse could gallop out of a cloud. Pegasus, perhaps.

    • August 15, 2011 at 6:45 am

Thanks Viv. I did like that image when I saw it. Reminded me; a friend and I saw a herd of giraffes in the clouds. Perhaps we were 10 or 11 yrs. old.

  8. August 15, 2011 at 3:10 am

Awesome sonnet and visuals are excellent. A sad tone to your poem and beautifully written :)

What a beautiful poem. I wish your days to be sunny again and may that sweet music fill your soul once more. The picture fits the poem perfectly. You did it again my friend. You know me, i don’t know anything about poetry, but whatever you are doing, i like it! It really seems to be your avenue of expression and release. I hope you find peace within.

    Love you girl!

  12. August 15, 2011 at 6:58 am

Nice use of the sonnet form– my fave!

    • August 15, 2011 at 7:20 am

So happy you enjoyed this. I like sonnets too.

  13. August 15, 2011 at 7:06 am

This is a wonderful sonnet – such a mood of wistful longing, and wonder at the inspiration nature offers the observing eye.
    I loved the lines:

I hunger laughter shared on sunny days –
on our backs; finding cloud shapes in blue skies.
I miss your music dancing on my skin…

Thank you for sharing your piece with us at Real Toads.

Thank you Kerry, I stumbled upon your blog and found it interesting and informative. I’ll be back!

  14. August 15, 2011 at 12:07 pm

I admire your courage in trying an Italian sonnet. Nicely done, pure in style.

Did you find it more of a challenge than the Shakespearian? For some reason, the Italian sonnets boggle my mind. The rhyming pattern frustrates me. Still, the only way we grow is by trying. That’s why you are leaving me in the dust.

    • August 15, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Mike, as you know poetry has a rythum such as a drum. I am discovering the different beats associated with each form. I would like to think we are in this “dust” together. You bring clarity when I get dust in my eyes. One foot infront of the other partner! You are my other foot when it comes to writing poetry, for it was your first footstep that opened this world for me.

  15. August 15, 2011 at 12:12 pm

“my willing heart drawn into your eclipse –
    has left me drained.”

Loved the whole piece but that has a real charge. I enjoy your writing! :-)

    • August 15, 2011 at 12:45 pm

  16. August 15, 2011 at 7:59 pm

Simply beautiful (again!). I never cease to find such enjoyment and pleasure reading your poetry. Such vivid settings in well formed verse. Keep experimenting. A lot to learn from your work :-)

    “I long for truth behind your phantom eyes;
release your secret world, allow me in.”

This line resonates so much with me. That curiosity rising, looking for what is hidden, and guarded by the mysterious, just beyond the threshold of one’s reach. Love it! Great job

    • August 15, 2011 at 8:07 pm

      Pervagus
I enjoy your comments immensely. I like the fact you enjoy a well formed verse. Thank you.

First time on your site, and am I glad I stopped! You are a true romantic – and I’m sure much more; I will peruse your site a bit.

I read all poems aloud, and this one rolled off my tongue like caramel. Such careful choices of words, beautifully expressed. My favorite line is:
“I miss your music dancing on my skin.” That made me tingle a bit. Lovely write.

Strange, this thing we do…turning heartache into tangible beauty…touching others who have been there….all in it for a penny or a pound. The only way. Those who feel deeply will always resonate as kindred spirits.

And you’re as cute as the nose on a kitten.

  21. August 16, 2011 at 1:40 pm

your music dancing on my skin…oh i feel the longing in this…beautiful pain in the loss…

An easy flowing sonnet which deals with hard things softly, and with that lingering on the mind cadence only a sonnet can give–i can’t write them worth a hill of beans, but I love reading them, and this one is lovely. Enjoyed it much.

    • August 16, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Thank you for your comment about sonnets. I am particularly finding them worth the time and effort. Glad you enjoyed my little poem site.

Lovely sonnet! I think this form the summit of English forms and quite the most difficult. You have achieved a real beauty here that binds a dreamlike experience to a love song. What could be more Shakespearean than that! I enjoyed this very much.

    • August 16, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Thank you Gay very much for your lovely comment. I enjoy poets that can truly appreicate a sonnet.

  28. August 16, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Your music dancing on my skin — how great imagery is that!!

But these phantom eyes say it all think, the kind of eyes that look right through us, never revealing any truths we can cling to.

I really enjoyed this, and your smiling photo in your sidebar.

    • August 16, 2011 at 4:50 pm

Jannie! Bingo! You pcked up on that line perfectly. Phamtom eyes, we have all seen then I think

A great sonnet with tremendous visuals to go with it.
I love the line ‘I hunger laughter shared on sunny days’ – provoked memories from my childhood, lying with friends in the fileds watching the summer skies.
    A great read. Thanks

A lovely sonnet, difficult form it is, but you did a good job of mixing human emotion with imagery.

    Works well.

  34. August 17, 2011 at 2:54 pm

This poignant piece is evocative of wonderful times that the writer longs to rekindle. The lovely softness and not-quite-pleading bring a gentle dignity to something difficult to experience and to write about. You have done an awesome job here. Well done!

  39. August 19, 2011 at 2:31 pm

I can’t believe (quite egotistical) that I haven’t already commented on this! And after this many glasses of wine I shouldn’t, since whatever I say isn’t believable… But I LOVE this. In so many ways… Both from a poetic form kind of love and a simply emotional kind if love… You are amazing! This is amazing! I’m just sorry I am so late in commenting! *big hugs*

Stunning image! Your words carry like the skies steed, trodding onward, pulling the reader into your world.

Conflicting thoughts merge, lacking words to say,
my willing heart drawn into your eclipse –
has left me drained. A warm tear gently slips
down a familiar path, wet lines portray.

Beautiful imagery here in your words as well.
