Tree of Dreams

This was my humble attempt writing for a prompt from Bluebell Books regarding Children’s Literature.  The image prompt was a child with a small sapling.  But as you can see, the tree grew, as children do.

Sways in the wind, tall supple trees
dance, leaves shadow the ribbed white bark
long graceful limbs play with the breeze
the distant call of meadow lark

Hidden by earth, the roots reach out
in the valley of mountain high
quenching a thirst of summer drought
absorbs the cooling spring close by

Sometimes known as the tree of dreams
the willow dances with the moon
her magic seen in silver streams
enchanted light by night in June

All that is seen, one should believe
in dreams where children do fly free
it depends on how you perceive
the gift from the tall willow tree

Clinging White Sand

Caught in the dune’s forever shifting sand
white grains shimmer the mirage distant far
ocean winds cavort over moonscape land
as shadows deepen exposing night’s star

Fine sand clings to the craving untouched skin
so gently brushed off by your love’s monsoon
was this the catalyst; a beginning?
hidden deep within the barren white dunes

Vanilla ice cream, ripple smoothing down
endless curves of white – the blowing sand shifts
seamlessly, blended by nature’s blue, drown
the time – ignored vistas of carving drifts

Summer warmth heals the soul locked in winter
a tear of joy rains down on thirsty land
did we find each other in life’s splinter?
As you brushed away the clinging white sand

Eyes – CINQUAIN POEM

Vision

Watching, seeing,

Smiling, blinking, crying

Eyes say what the mind is thinking

Windows

*American poet Adelaide Crapsey created the cinquain based on the Japanese haiku*

1969: A Personal Reverie – 4th of July, 2011

Daisy-chained flowers, style of old
woven through cascading hair with
macramé belt on hips worn low
a small brass bell with colored beads

Tie-dyed shirts and bell-bottom jeans
sewn velvet patches with peace signs
cover the skin from holes worn out
plus one of  Jerry Garcia

A starry-eyed innocent girl
one with nature; longing for peace
the freedom she loved believed true
fiercely fought to never let go;

The wonders and surprise of youth
regardless of what the man said
ignoring rules – regulations
living life, forgoing regret

And all the while

War banners waved, the march went on
the radio blared protest songs
Crosby, Stills and Nash – Déjà Vu
and we all sang along, while still…

Our young flew home in wooden box
color flag draped – mothers mourn deep
spirit crying from their souls and
young flower children wept that year

1969 still burns deep
I will never forget those days

A Light Breeze

Sings like the wind, the notes collide;
producing serenades above.
Adrift, sweet sounds are floating by –
melodic songs coo, like a dove.

Swirling veil entwined with the breeze,
silk white dress embracing her form.
Dances freely beneath the trees,
as soulful moonlight keeps her warm.

Spirit so free, no thoughts to grieve
harmony – deep within her heart.
Radiant glow – midsummer’s eve;
a vision of exquisite art.

Beauteous angel – beacon light,
safe passage on this twisted road.
Future unknown – brighten the night
with your light upon me, bestowed.

The Aftermath; A horse and man

Amazing steed with hair silk white,
beauty graced – shadowed the moonlight.
No spiraled horn nor wings of flight;
earthbound hoofs pranced with sheer delight.

Adorned with crown, rider takes mount;
dreams of triumph fail to surmount.
From battles, deeply soul-engaged;
throws down stained spears – his heart enraged.

Battles drummed, he answered the call,
left scarred, yet survived above all.
Tattered vest – arrows injected,
war left his soul unprotected.

High on his horse with thoughts impure,
close his eyes to the world obscure.
Finds great solace – the rhythmic gait,
dark shadows of war bearing weight.
