Lesson Relearned – sonnet

Blue china broken on the floor

its’ tiny pieces scattered cost

Symbolic price for all love lost

as I watch you walk out the door

 

and leave behind a shattered heart

of broken dreams of what you did

allowed your mother’s heart be shredded

just take your things and quickly part.

 

And for once again I shall heal

replace old bandage which came loose

deceit and lies brought me to kneel

the heartache of tears runs profuse

 

Away you run, your deeds concealed

spin your tales of secret misuse.

Black Gold – Italian Sonnet

 One of the items on my “Bucket List” is to go to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for New Years.  When I heard of this current oil spill, it struck me in the heart.

 

 

A strangled hold onto the rocks,

not far the blue Sargasso Sea.

White suited sea gulls fly in flocks,

lost riggers join the absentee.

Below off-shore unearthly docks -

engraved with a fire memory.

Eleven deep in waters sail

on grey Horizon’s ghostly tale.

 

A strangled hold into the sand,

metallic rainbows pooled with rain.

While gasping life strain just to breathe,

more waves of death awash the land.

Their greed exploded dark insane

mad currents of black ocean seethe.

 

A strangled hold grips the unplanned

across slick mass in devil’s stain.

Disrupting nature’s primal gland,

injecting to withdraw for gain.

Destruction of earth from man’s hand,

Spill after spill, still no refrain.

Dreams of Peace

 

 

“Too much of everything

 

is just enough”

 

A stitch of words that frame

 

my license plate.

 

 

 

A sister’s gift

 

so many years ago.

 

How did she know

 

that I would frame my life

 

around those eight

 

Grateful Dead words?

 

 

 

 too much love is just enough

 

 too much peace is just enough

 

 

 

Were the little girls with flowers

 

in their hair wrong

 

so long ago?

 

 

 

To dream the dreams

 

the world

 

now hungers for.

Unrequited Love – Sestina

This poem was inspired by this beautiful painting which is for sale (see below for link). 

 

 Peace be with all of you.

-TheMsLvh

 

In silent motion I drift seamlessly

between reality’s fine line of dreams;

caught in the labyrinth of wanted love.

Stained corridors of promised fairy tales,

dull years of memories, mutating time -

defacing truth, obscuring my heart’s view.

 

Inside this winding parallactic view,

the melting promised years fade seamlessly.

My heart’s desire wrapped in wasted time,

within residing realms of frozen dreams.

You offered simple masquerading tales -

disguising charm for unrequited love. 

 

Quixotic fantasies entangled love,

wants heightened tantalizing points of view.

Continued to believe your fabled tales -

while time elapsed, unnoticed, seamlessly.

Hypocrisy laughed at my lustful dreams

until it was too late to salvage time.

 

Our carnal knowledge granted borrowed time

to orchestrate an ever-lasting love;

addressed within a gentle poet’s dream.

Emotions askew sealed your slighted view,

abandoning us as you seamlessly

went off collecting souvenirs of tales.

 

Suggestions of love mock your empty tales

rehearsed along the trail of misty time.

With caution you played your games seamlessly;

a temporal affair deflecting love.

You’re not aware I can escape this view

and your attempts to smuggle glossy dreams.

 

I shall relinquish all my vanished dreams;

eviscerate assuming hidden tales.

Forever you will be in my eye’s view

but I release myself from spiraled time.

Until you can feel one platonic-love,

in silent motion I drift seamlessly.

 

And though I view our noncommittal time -

enjoying lust with all your tales of love;

I am exhaling my dreams, seamlessly.

Endless Rails – Sonnet

 

Conductor please, I’ll buy a ticket sir,

one with a window and reclining seat

of leather, ashen white, to rest my eyes.

 

Caress cut crystal bronzed with fine liqueur -

accentuates heart’s rhythm of repeat;

across split rails of iron laden tracks.

 

Bequeath my soul to wander boundless skies,

eternity unburdened I prefer;

and leave behind cruel visions of defeat.

 

These fleeting images across sunrise -

through railway tunnels never looking back;

on restful rails of vast suspended time.

 

Discover hidden truth for which I lack.

Upon this train, towards endless, I shall climb.

I Must Surrender- rondeau redoublé

  

 

I must surrender the mind’s hold,

let go the blaze trapped in my head.

Times have changed. Leaving misty old

perceptions of what is, now dead.

 

Raised independent – so inbred,

to never swallow what was told.

To always question – not be led,

I must surrender the mind’s hold.

 

Events have changed my journey’s road;

the day I flew but fell instead.

All my dreams dying – turning cold -

let go the blaze trapped in my head.

 

I never feared what lay ahead,

those days of youth brought suns of gold;

so quick to alter by moon’s end,

Times have changed. Leaving misty old

 

faint memories pulled from the void.

Of better days where I transcend -

to grasp a breath and long behold

perceptions of what is, now dead.

 

Succumb to pain, I hide in bed;

heal mind and body, feel controlled.

New dreams will come a doctor said  -

relax and breath and let unfold.

I must surrender.

*Technically speaking a rondeau redoublé is made of six quatrains ended by a hemistich (of exactly the same type as the one in the rondeau form, and built on the first verse as well). The 24 verses, 4 of which are found twice (in the first stanza and as endings of stanzas 2-5) all belong to only two rhyme groups, the tricky scheme of this form is:

Awake in Nightmares – Sonnet

 

There’s no one in the control room;

directing any flame of light.

Dark shadows ready to consume;

the mindless empty of the flight.

Unable to escape the doom -

foreboding thoughts tied up in fright.

Old premonitions come alive -

alerting mind’s eye to survive.

 

Exotic faces lay in wait,

beyond the sound of voiceless screams -

releasing shivers down the spine.

Deep crevices in eyes dilate;

erasing lines from truth or dreams -

caught in the spiral of decline.

 

These are vibrations cursed in hate,

that rupture ears allowing streams

of bloody red to desecrate;

and split what is real at the seams.

Awake within the nightmare’s gate

unleashing fears of wild extremes.

Hats – Terza Rima

   In my discovery of the different forms of poetry,  I came across the Terza Rima.  This is my first attempt using this form.  Hope it reads well.  I have included its description of the form below. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did writing it. A  bit singy-songy I fear.

 

 

I have worn several hats throughout the years;

reflecting different roles I played each day.

Subjective meanings – kept as souvenirs.

 

A feathered birthday hat inviting play;

adorned year after year with no delay -

another wish on candles if I may?

 

A mournful hat weeps sadness of betray -

A smoke-stained cap that kissed a Reggae song -

A lover’s chapeau which will never stray.

 

There was a hat I dared not keep for long;

’cause it belonged to the quick stepping cop -

who chased me for the mischief I did wrong.

 

My favorite hat sold never in a shop,

uniting words on paper to be sung:

A Poet’s hat worn ’till the last ink drop.

 

Such memories in hats when I was young,

show steps of life upon each ladder’s rung.

Form

Terza rima is a three-line stanza using chain rhyme in the pattern A-B-A, B-C-B, C-D-C, D-E-D. There is no limit to the number of lines, but poems or sections of poems written in terza rima end with either a single line or couplet repeating the rhyme of the middle line of the final tercet. The two possible endings for the example above are d-e-d, e or d-e-d, e-e. There is no set rhythm for terza rima, but in English, iambic pentameter is generally preferred.

History

The first known use of terza rima is in Dante’s Divina Commedia. In creating the form, Dante may have been influenced by the lyric form used by the Provençal troubadours. The three-line pattern may have been intended to suggest the Holy Trinity. Inspired by Dante, other Italian poets, including Petrarch and Boccaccio, began using the form.

The first English poet to write in terza rima was Geoffrey Chaucer, who used it for his Complaint to His Lady. Although a difficult form to use in English because of the relative paucity of rhyme words available in a language which has, in comparison with Italian, a more complex phonology, terza rima has been used by Milton, Byron (in his Prophecy of Dante) and Shelley (in his Ode to the West Wind and The Triumph of Life). Thomas Hardy also used the form of meter in ‘Friends Beyond’ to interlink the characters and continue the flow of the poem. A number of 20th-century poets also employed the form. These include Archibald MacLeish, W. H. Auden, Andrew Cannon, William Carlos Williams, T. S. Eliot, Derek Walcott, Clark Ashton Smith, James Merrill, Robert Frost and Richard Wilbur. [Information source :Wikipedia]

Amphitrite – Sailor’s Sonnet

*Amphitrite- Ἀμφιτρίτη – [am-fi-trahy-tee]
The goddess queen of the sea, wife of Lord Poseidon. Amphitrite was the goddess who spawned the sea’s rich bounty–fish and shellfish–as well as dolphins, seals and whales.

 

 

The sailor’s story told from long ago -

a Maiden bravely swims through winds of force;

her essence glided free where trade winds blow.

Inside her ocean currents, set a course -

to spread abundance within water’s flow,

exploding life to spread true nature’s source.

Exquisite sunset hues in cloudless skies,

above her depths of cold – a sailor flies.

 

Beneath secluded shores of distant lore,

soft melodies entwine the ocean’s tide -

white frosted tips on swells of lapis blue.

Grey whales surrender waters – breaching soar;

to kiss the moon – igniting stars collide.

Amazing glory – sailor’s brilliant view.

 

Sweet Goddess, Amphitrite, we implore;

allow the Shepard’s moon hold safe our ride.

Deliver us upon your distant shore -

take not into your arms where you reside.

For you have charmed so many men before -

within your ink of darkness – sailors hide.

The sonetto rispetto is a specialized form of poetry related to the more well-known sonnet. It was created and popularized in Italy during the historical period known as the Renaissance (14th to 17th centuries C.E.)

 

 A sonetto rispetto has 8 lines of iambic pentameter in the first stanzas, in a rhyme scheme of  a b a b a b c c. The following two stanzas have 6 lines with a slightly different rhyming scheme.

 

This form was used for composing improvised folk music using popular tunes, and the subject matter was usually an address of love from a gentleman to a lady.

Politician’s Sonnet

 

A northern breeze ignites a raging storm;

exposing cloaked deceptions in my head -

dark ebullition of emotions churn.

 

Malaise surrounds my vessel to conform;

those fervent pleas -the trunk of your words said.

The residue: your shallow truth will stain

 

and sweep away my heart – ablaze to burn.

Black clouds of spoken dust rehearsed to swarm;

enrage my thoughts -integrity is dead.

 

Words matter – sober truth is what I yearn;

regardless if lies bring unyielding pain.

Protect me not; your tales pulsate my skin.

 

Evading truth – your spin will never gain

my fervid heart – not credulous within.
