Beyond
I traveled the edge
into your darkness
where only strength
of love would dare roam

Compassion – my guide
Empathy – my desire
to glimpse through
your stained blue eyes

and see what you have seen
and feel what you have felt
and cried when you have bled

Your lingering visions
frightening to the core
adhering to old
melancholy etchings
of aged distant time

I know…I know what it is
to be alone

Yet, know this truth, my love
loosen away the empty cold

Cast aside those blackened nights
remove all stones, clear the path
your sunrise has begun

Unrequited Love – Sestina

This poem was inspired by this beautiful painting which is for sale (see below for link). 

 

 Peace be with all of you.

In silent motion I drift seamlessly

between reality’s fine line of dreams;

caught in the labyrinth of wanted love.

Stained corridors of promised fairy tales,

dull years of memories, mutating time -

defacing truth, obscuring my heart’s view.

 

Inside this winding parallactic view,

the melting promised years fade seamlessly.

My heart’s desire wrapped in wasted time,

within residing realms of frozen dreams.

You offered simple masquerading tales -

disguising charm for unrequited love. 

 

Quixotic fantasies entangled love,

wants heightened tantalizing points of view.

Continued to believe your fabled tales -

while time elapsed, unnoticed, seamlessly.

Hypocrisy laughed at my lustful dreams

until it was too late to salvage time.

 

Our carnal knowledge granted borrowed time

to orchestrate an ever-lasting love;

addressed within a gentle poet’s dream.

Emotions askew sealed your slighted view,

abandoning us as you seamlessly

went off collecting souvenirs of tales.

 

Suggestions of love mock your empty tales

rehearsed along the trail of misty time.

With caution you played your games seamlessly;

a temporal affair deflecting love.

You’re not aware I can escape this view

and your attempts to smuggle glossy dreams.

 

I shall relinquish all my vanished dreams;

eviscerate assuming hidden tales.

Forever you will be in my eye’s view

but I release myself from spiraled time.

Until you can feel one platonic-love,

in silent motion I drift seamlessly.

 

And though I view our noncommittal time -

enjoying lust with all your tales of love;

I am exhaling my dreams, seamlessly.

Endless Rails – Sonnet

 

Conductor please, I’ll buy a ticket sir,

one with a window and reclining seat

of leather, ashen white, to rest my eyes.

 

Caress cut crystal bronzed with fine liqueur -

accentuates heart’s rhythm of repeat;

across split rails of iron laden tracks.

 

Bequeath my soul to wander boundless skies,

eternity unburdened I prefer;

and leave behind cruel visions of defeat.

 

These fleeting images across sunrise -

through railway tunnels never looking back;

on restful rails of vast suspended time.

 

Discover hidden truth for which I lack.

Upon this train, towards endless, I shall climb.

I Must Surrender- rondeau redoublé

  

 

I must surrender the mind’s hold,

let go the blaze trapped in my head.

Times have changed. Leaving misty old

perceptions of what is, now dead.

 

Raised independent – so inbred,

to never swallow what was told.

To always question – not be led,

I must surrender the mind’s hold.

 

Events have changed my journey’s road;

the day I flew but fell instead.

All my dreams dying – turning cold -

let go the blaze trapped in my head.

 

I never feared what lay ahead,

those days of youth brought suns of gold;

so quick to alter by moon’s end,

Times have changed. Leaving misty old

 

faint memories pulled from the void.

Of better days where I transcend -

to grasp a breath and long behold

perceptions of what is, now dead.

 

Succumb to pain, I hide in bed;

heal mind and body, feel controlled.

New dreams will come a doctor said  -

relax and breath and let unfold.

I must surrender.

*Technically speaking a rondeau redoublé is made of six quatrains ended by a hemistich (of exactly the same type as the one in the rondeau form, and built on the first verse as well). The 24 verses, 4 of which are found twice (in the first stanza and as endings of stanzas 2-5) all belong to only two rhyme groups, the tricky scheme of this form is:

ABAB BAB1 ABA2 BAB3 ABA4 BABAh

Think Only This of Me

Prompt #17 for Carry On Tuesday, http://carryontuesdayprompt.blogspot.com/, was to use all or part of “If I should die, think only this of me” (the first line of Rupert Brooks poem, The Soldier). *Thanks Mike Patrick for inspiring me to write this after reading his poem*. I used iambic pentameter in Quatrain.

 

 

Remembering past days of childhood dreams,

explored the world through starry wild eyes,

Adventure was attractive;  I must say,

unbridled freedom was my crowning prize!

 

With money saved, I flew across the pond,

experiencing new lands with scenic views.
Impoverished days or wealthy party ways,

I traveled miles, wearing holes in shoes.

 

The love for people I hold dear to heart,

along with animals who roamed the land.

True nature’s gifts of rainbow pots of gold;

and warmth of sunlight with cool ocean sand.

 

I lived my life embracing truth of love,

to give much more of me than to receive.

Delightfully filled heart with love to give,

unselfish quest for those who are in need.

 

If I should die, think only this of me,

my soul belongs to Mother Nature’s thread.

Don’t shed a tear because my life’s been full,

just put that party hat upon my head!

Broken Wings

Image inspired..  this is simply poetic expression. 

 

 

 

Close the windows and lock the door,

I cannot take this anymore.

Throwing down the cards, fold my hand.

This is not what I had planned

 

I have not been myself lately,

skilled knives have mended so greatly-

the bones, but lost my will to sing.

Gravity won and broke my wings

 

There’s no more fear in the breakdown,

I have lost the will not to drown.

So easy to ride, down this slide,

can’t you see it in my dark eyes?

  

I’ve been good at wearing the mask,

to hide the tears, so they don’t ask.

Such busy lives, no time to spare,

so let me go, for I’m not scared.

 

I have slipped far, this time dear,

ready to quit the game, no fear.

Into a hole where time has ceased,

longing to claim my soul deceased.

 

No metaphors to shield the weak,

silence is what I crave, don’t speak.

Has nothing to do with you dear,

it’s just as plain and clear…

 

to me…so,

Drown a Flask

  

 

Confusion purl inside my head,

sad thoughts besiege this weary soul.

Words spoken - carelessly said,

alone, I plummet down a hole.

 

Can eyes see pain behind my mask,

concealing anguish buried deep?

Escape your own pain, drown a flask,

Your pseudo façade makes you weep.

 

Expressions glaring dissension,

this anger boils your mad face red.

The wine color brings forth tension,

unsaid words scratch till hearts are shred. 

 

Appears to be a no-win lot,

old patterns never seem to lie.

Let distance heal this love torn knot,

before time takes toll and we die.

To the Wood – a Sonnet

It’s time to travel so I must go

to the place where Redwoods grow.

 

 

 

 

 

This heart is yearning for my earth bound friend,

to mend the wreckage done and calm the seethe.

Dense woods I scurry, searching to transcend

and melt into your breath, so I can breathe.

 

My spirit yielded freely to the wood,

when I was young and grew beneath cool shade.

The tender young fern danced under the hood

and played with sunbeam pearls in soft cascade.

 

Just hold me tightly with your Redwood arm,

to gently cradle empty souless sleep.

My heart is bleeding, keep me safe from harm,

I come to heal these spirit wounds that weep.

 

Alone I walk beneath my forest friend,

internal peace I seek, my soul to mend.

Grief Often gets in the Way

Grief often gets in the way,

like a granite stone in a river.

Impeding the gentle sway

of the moonlight’s reflected silver.

 

Mourning with uncontrolled sorrow;

which steals the breath away.

Wounded hearts forget tomorrow -

will bring sunshine’s warm bouquet.

 

Sadness, hidden deeply behind -

longing eyes, searching to find;

the joy, that once playfully lived

in a beating heart that thrived.

 

Sometimes there is music -

only grieving ears can hear.

Soothing melodies floating , the intrinsic

strum of a harp, angels hidden near.

 

Lonely hearts long to fly away,

held captive by a thief.

Familiar creature appears each day -

ominous and dark known as grief.

Letting Go

Breathlessness…
It happens every time you call.

Listening …
Hearing of your growing pains and misguided falls.

Remembering…
Reflecting when I was that brave and young.

Concerned…
For I was not as intense; so highly strung.

Faith…
You were taught and hopefully practice compassion with love.

Confidence…
You will triumph and most certainly rise above.

Trusting…
Hoping you’re not having internal delusions of grandeur.

Love…
It is hard not to interfere and remain demur.

Parent…
I need to cease this maternal conflict; stand down and pray.

Child…
I am trying my best in each and every way.
